The Sovereignty of God and man's responsibility

with respect to eternal life - faithful responsibility
with respect to eternal death - faithless responsibility
AND ALL ARE OF GOD!

INTRODUCTION

The noun ‘responsibility’ comes from the words response and ability. In its active sense, it means the ability to respond to fulfill an obligation or the ability to respond to a situation. However, our exposition is on the responsibility of man concerning his spiritual obligation to worship God in Spirit and in Truth. The Word of God reveals two types of responsibilities that God has imputed to man for His purposes and glory. One is a Faithful responsibility, which is spiritual (Hebrews 11:1-31) the other is a faithless responsibility, which is unspiritual (John 19:10-11).

  1. All men are under the spiritual obligation and held accountable (Romans 14:12) to worship God in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:24), because God has created all men. This is what all men ought to do.
  2. Worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth is a spiritual obligation. The question is do all men have the spiritual ability to fulfill this spiritual obligation? The answer is no (John 3:3). Therefore, being under the spiritual obligation to worship God in Spirit and in truth, does not equate to having the spiritual ability to do so. You must be born again (regenerated by the Holy Spirit).
  3. Both the regenerate and unregenerate are under the same spiritual obligation and are accountable to God. Yet, it is obvious that, only the regenerate has the spiritual ability to respond and perform his spiritual obligation of worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth (John 3:3-8; 4:24).
  4. Therefore, the responsibility to perform the spiritual obligation to worship God in Spirit and in Truth is a special responsibility. It is spiritual in character. God gives it to only His elect people. This, the Spirit of God does in regeneration. It is bound to the gift of Faith, given by the same Spirit. Therefore, this special responsibility, to fulfill the spiritual obligation to worship God, given to only the regenerate, by God Himself, is a Faithful responsibility (Hebrews 11:6).
  5. As for the unregenerate, who cannot worship God in Spirit and in Truth, he will not be able to fulfill his spiritual obligation. Instead, he finds himself practicing idolatry, worshipping the creature, instead of the creator bringing upon himself the wrath of God (Romans1:18-25). For this, the unregenerate is accountable to God. This then, is his responsibility, given to them by God Himself. The unregenerate does exactly opposite from the regenerate. It is a faithless responsibility (Hebrews 11:4-6). Abel demonstrated a faithful responsibility, whilst Cain, a faithless one.
  6. If any should object, to the truth that both a Faithful and a faithless responsibility are of the secret workings of God in men, the rebuttal is this. Just as God is the sole Giver of a brilliant mind, He is also the sole Giver of a dull mind. In the same sovereign execution - He is the sole Giver of a faithful responsibility (Hebrews 11:1-31) as well as a faithless responsibility (John 19:10-11). Just as the brilliant and the dull, will fulfill God’s sovereign purposes and bring glory to God. So also, will the faithful and the faithless, with their God given opposing responsibilities, do likewise!
  7. God, being the Sovereign creator of all men, has purposed some, to be vessels of honour and some, to be vessels of dishonour (Romans 9:21). To fulfill His sovereign purposes, God has given the vessels of honour, the faithful responsibility to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:24; Hebrews 11:1-31). As for the vessels of dishonour, God has given them the faithless responsibility to perform evil i.e. denying Christ (Genesis 3:1-6, John 19:10-11).
  8. All men are therefore accountable to God. To the vessels of honour that have been given the faithful responsibility to worship God in Spirit and in truth - eternal life. As for the vessels of dishonour that have been given faithless responsibility to perform evil i.e. denying Christ - eternal death.
  9. This is the inscrutable will and judgments of God. This therefore is The Sovereignty of God and the responsibilities of men. Faithful men, with faithful responsibilities exist together with faithless men, with faithless responsibilities (Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43). All are of God. For of Him, and through Him, are all things: to whom is glory forever. Amen.

Who hath ears to hear, let him hear:

ROMANS 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

JOHN 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

JOHN 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

JOHN 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

JOHN 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
